TWO BUTLER COUNTY JURIES RESULT IN TWO GUILTY VERDICT

(HAMILTON, OH) Prosecutor Robin Piper announces two successful prosecutions, in two separate jury trials concluding today. Dustin Petit, a 33-year old Hamilton man was found guilty by a Butler County Jury of Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence of Alcohol (O.V.I.), a fourth degree felony. On November 24, 2007, Petit was driving over 60 miles per hour on Neilan Boulevard when he was pulled over by a Hamilton Police Officer. After issuing a standard field sobriety test, Petit was found to be intoxicated and was arrested. The jury deliberated for 3½ hours before finding Petit guilty. In light of Petit’s five prior OVI convictions, he will faces up to 7½ years in prison when he is sentenced on January 12, 2009, before the Honorable Patricia Oney. Derek Campbell, a 19-year old man was also found guilty by a Butler County jury today. After deliberating for six hours, over two days, Derek Campbell was convicted of Arson, a fourth degree felony and Criminal Trespass, a fourth degree misdemeanor. On May 7, 2008, Derek Campbell entered an historic apartment building on Hensel Place, starting a fire in the attic. The apartment building sustained over $180,000 in damage and subsequently had to be razed. Investigator Tom Angst of the City of Hamilton Fire Department was the lead investigator and worked countless hours documenting the damage to the building, as well as tracking down witnesses to aid in the prosecution. Campbell who fled the area to avoid police, was extradited from Colorado for prosecution. Campbell is currently serving a jail term for an unrelated theft offense in Hamilton, and has a conviction from Colorado stemming from using a paint marker to mark the word "Arson" on public property. He faces an additional 18 months on today’s convictions when he is sentenced on December 30, 2008, before the Honorable Craig Hedric.
