Hamilton Man Guilty of Illegal Use of Food Stamps

A man who wanted to sell his food stamps so he could have cash to pay for other items, such as his utility bills, was found guilty after a trial had deliberated for only 30 minutes on January 30, 2009. Orville Gregory, 50 years old from Hamilton, was found guilty of Illegal Use of Food Stamps (a 5th degree felony). Gregory was sentenced today to 3 years of probation. He must complete 200 hours of community service; undergo drug and alcohol monitoring; and is suspended from receiving food stamps for 3 years.

“The food stamp program has very strict regulations and the participants are made aware of these restrictions. It is against the law to buy, sell, or trade food stamps - - they are to be used exclusively for the purchase of food. Those who abuse the program are committing fraud and will be prosecuted” stated Prosecutor Piper. If any member of the public is aware of suspected food stamp fraud, please call Investigator Roger Clark with Job and Family Services at 887-4082.
