2010 Substance Abuse Prevention Project announces the 4th Annual Prom and Graduation Summit Agenda

The 2010 Substance Abuse Prevention Project announces the 4th Annual Prom and Graduation Summit Agenda to take place Thursday, March 4, 2010 from 9:00 AM - 1:15 PM at Johnson Hall, Miami University Middletown. Local police chiefs, the Butler County Sheriff, and the Butler County Prosecutor, plan to attend and interact with approximately 150 students from a variety of local high schools. Tim Wurster will begin the agenda by sharing his personal tragedy which involved drinking and driving, resulting in him being in a wheelchair for life and the death of his brother. The students will have break-out sessions and discuss the creation of public service announcements and other strategies to bring about student and adult awareness. Each group of students will come up with strategies for the school district they represent.

The groups will then come together and share with the group-at-large their ideas and strategies for heightening prom and graduation safety and awareness. The group-at-large will discuss their strategies with one another and entertain questions and comments from others in the group.

At 12:00 p.m., a news conference will take place before the student audience reviewing the strategies generated by the students promoting safety awareness and the substance abuse prevention. The Sheriff and the Prosecutor will comment on the various strategies and render feedback from a law enforcement perspective.

This is the fourth such summit to take place. Students have accepted responsibility for their actions and since the project has been in place, there have been no student fatalities during the prom and graduation season.

The media is encouraged to attend and film any and all of the events. Public awareness is key in promoting the strategies and encouraging the students to aggressively implement their plans and creative ideas for promoting prom and graduation safety. Media coverage is an important component. The effort of student safety during prom and graduation celebration is one that needs diligence.
